A New Benchmark in Entry-Level Adventure Motorcycling
Triumph Motorcycles India has officially launched the much-anticipated Scrambler 400 X at an introductory price of ₹2.94 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Developed in collaboration with Bajaj Auto, this new entrant represents Triumph’s aggressive push into the entry-level premium motorcycle segment in India.
The Scrambler 400 X shares its engine and frame platform with the already launched Speed 400, but with several key enhancements to suit the off-road-focused nature of the Scrambler. With the Scrambler 400 X, Triumph aims to attract riders looking for a versatile bike that performs equally well in urban settings and on challenging trails.
Engine and Performance
At the heart of the Scrambler 400 X is the brand-new 398.15cc single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine, dubbed the TR-series engine. It produces 40 PS of peak power at 8,000 rpm and 37.5 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm, mated to a 6-speed gearbox with a slip-and-assist clutch for smooth gear transitions.
The engine is Euro 5 and BS6 Phase 2 compliant, ensuring it meets the latest emission norms in India. Triumph claims the engine has been designed to deliver a strong mid-range punch, ideal for spirited highway cruising and trail riding alike.
Suspension and Handling
One of the highlights of the Scrambler 400 X is its off-road ready suspension setup. It comes equipped with:
- 43mm USD big-piston forks with 150mm of travel at the front
- Monoshock with preload adjustability and 150mm of travel at the rear
Compared to the Speed 400’s road-focused setup, the Scrambler 400 X offers significantly longer suspension travel, making it better suited for rough terrain.
The bike also features a longer 1,418mm wheelbase, wider handlebars, and a high-mounted exhaust, all of which contribute to its scrambler DNA.
Braking and Safety
Braking duties are handled by a 320mm front disc with a radial 4-piston caliper and a 230mm rear disc. The motorcycle comes equipped with dual-channel ABS, which is switchable at the rear, allowing riders more control during off-road adventures.
Additional safety features include:
- Ride-by-wire throttle
- Traction control (switchable)
- LED lighting all around
- Emergency hazard warning lights
All these features combine to offer a premium riding experience and superior safety on various terrains.
Design and Features
The Triumph Scrambler 400 X embraces a classic yet rugged look with signature scrambler styling cues. It features:
- A wide braced handlebar with knuckle guards
- Engine bash plate for protection
- Rugged dual-purpose tyres (19-inch front and 17-inch rear)
- High-mounted fenders
- Dual-tone colour schemes
The bike also gets a semi-digital instrument cluster with an analogue speedometer and an LCD screen displaying trip meters, gear position, fuel gauge, and more.
Dimensions and Ergonomics
With a seat height of 835mm, the Scrambler 400 X may be slightly tall for shorter riders, but the narrow design of the seat helps in maintaining approachability. The rider triangle is upright, and the bike is built to comfortably handle long rides as well as city commuting.
It tips the scales at 179 kg (kerb), which is reasonably light for a scrambler-style motorcycle in this category.
Market Positioning and Competition
The Scrambler 400 X enters a competitive segment currently dominated by models like the Royal Enfield Scram 411, Yezdi Scrambler, and Husqvarna Svartpilen 401. However, Triumph is offering a compelling combination of modern engineering, classic styling, and a global brand name at a highly competitive price.
The ₹2.94 lakh ex-showroom price is introductory and may increase in the coming months. Triumph has already begun deliveries through its rapidly expanding dealership network across major Indian cities.
Collaboration with Bajaj Auto
The Scrambler 400 X is jointly developed with Bajaj Auto, one of India’s largest two-wheeler manufacturers. The partnership allows Triumph to leverage Bajaj’s manufacturing capabilities while maintaining global quality standards. The motorcycle is being built at Bajaj’s Chakan plant near Pune and is expected to be exported to international markets as well.
Registration and Documentation
Prospective buyers can register the motorcycle through the official Vahan portal, which also allows them to verify vehicle details, insurance status, and ownership history.
Final Verdict
The Triumph Scrambler 400 X offers a strong value proposition for riders seeking a stylish, feature-packed scrambler that can handle a variety of terrains. With its modern features, premium build quality, and the backing of the Triumph-Bajaj alliance, it’s set to be a game-changer in the sub-500cc adventure motorcycle segment in India.
